Nia Andrews, a recent West Chester University alumna, gained a new title as Miss Philadelphia on Saturday, Feb. 25. Andrews recently held the title of Miss Bucks County in 2016 and Miss WCU in 2015. Andrews graduated in December 2016 with a B.S in biology and a minor in dance. “I really didn’t know anything about pageants,” said Andrews.

The Republican Party pulled their healthcare bill from the House floor on Friday, March 24. Efforts to replace the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, fell short after the bill didn’t garner any votes from the Democratic Party and received little support from the Republican Party. The Republican bill included limits on spending for Medicaid, drawbacks on coverage for birth control and funding for Planned Parenthood, increase in funding for community health centers and the elimination of subsidies from Obamacare.

This month, the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education’s Board of Governors named Dr. Christopher Fiorentino as the 15th president of West Chester University. After Greg Weisenstein retired last spring after eight years, Fiorentino was appointed as interim president while a search was called for WCU’s next president.

In a Facebook Live press conference, Dr. Kenneth Mash, president of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (APSCUF), has stated a strike is still pending. Joined by Jamie Martin, vice president of APSCUF, and Chris Hallen, APSCUF treasurer, Mash announced that Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), represented by Chancellor Frank Brogan, has given APSCUF a final offer and since walked away from the negotiation table.

On Wednesday, Sept. 28, the Center for Contemplative Studies (CCS) had its grand opening with remarks from West Chester Borough Mayor Carolyn Comitta, WCU Interim President Chris Fiorentino, Dean Linda Adams of the College of Health Sciences and important supporters of the CCS, Pat and Diane Croce.

Sykes Student Union is looking forward to big changes in the coming year. This summer, Sykes Student Union was under construction from the moment students left after spring commencement up until Aug. 27. The biggest renovations this summer that students took notice of is the new Center for Student Involvement (CSI), which replaced the former private student offices, and a back entrance to Sykes via the Ram’s Den on the bottom floor.

Many members of the West Chester University community came together to celebrate the life of freshman Jamie Herbert on Tuesday, April 19 on the front lawn of Allegheny Hall. Herbert passed away on Thursday, March 24. Herbert was not only a resident in Allegheny Hall, she was also the secretary of Allegheny Hall’s Residence Hall Association (RHA).
